The Maze Runner Trilogy by James Dashner

Summary:

If you ain’t scared, you ain’t human.

When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his name. He’s surrounded by strangers — boys whose memories are also gone.

Nice to meet ya, shank. Welcome to the Glade.

Outside the towering stone walls that surround the Glade is a limitless, ever-changing maze. It’s the only way out—and no one’s ever made it through alive.

Everything is going to change.

Then a girl arrives. The first girl ever. And the message she delivers is terrifying.

Remember. Survive. Run.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Book 1 - The Maze Runner; Book 2 - The Scorch Trials; Book 3 - The Death Cure.

Thoughts:

Hmm this series is definitely WORTH a read. Intense, exciting, a really good thriller. Book 1 is out in the theaters, but it's not what you would have pictured from the book. Trust me.

So I caught the movie before deciding on reading the book. Bad move. The pace and timing of events from the book was completely different from the movie. Let alone the details. But on the bright side, I finally understood the whole 'maze runner' idea in the right way and yes, the book was way better than the movie. As always.

In book 1, Alby did not die in the chaos from the grievers' destruction (from the movie). He died by volunteering himself up to save the rest and also because he didn't want to leave the glaze (from the book). Also, the escape was to jump off a cliff (from the book), not entering some hole (from the movie).

I was taken aback by Book 2. Thomas was supposed to be in love with Teresa from the before until Teresa betrayed him. She betrayed him to save him, but to Thomas, he felt that she could've fought back and tried to save him differently. That's where their love and trust burnt out. I felt the sadness from Teresa. Poor her.

Book 3 was ...... crazy. The ending was a little disappointing because I thought that Brenda would be the new variable. My heart dropped when Teresa died. It wasn't elaborated much which I'm thankful for, but I would've wanted her to be with Thomas. The downside of this book was the author didn't explain why Brenda knew about everything. It made me suspicious of her and at the end when she and Thomas was together, I couldn't feel happy. Happy ending, but could have been happier.

Be sure to read this series because it's good. If you're into Hunger Games, then you should not miss it. The movie was good too despite all the changes because they have to make it interesting, leaving out the dragginess.

Darkest Powers Series by Kelley Armstrong

Summary:

My name is Chloe Saunders and my life will never be the same again.

All I wanted was to make friends, meet boys, and keep on being ordinary. I don't even know what that means anymore. It all started on the day that I saw my first ghost - and the ghost saw me.

Now there are ghosts everywhere and they won't leave me alone. To top it all off, I somehow got myself locked up in Lyle House, a "special home" for troubled teens. Yet the home isn't what it seems. Don't tell anyone, but I think there might be more to my housemates than meets the eye. The question is, whose side are they on? it's up to me to figure out the dangerous secrets behind Lyle House...before its skeletons come back to haunt me.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Book 1 - The Summoning; Book 2 - The Awakening; Book 3 - The Reckoning.

Thoughts:

This series left me a little less than satisfied, probably because I was expecting all the twists to be more surprising. The ending was underwhelming because the author didn't explain much. Perhaps this series hadn't ended with just three books?

I don't get the success/failure of the genetically modified supernaturals. No further explanations made. Derek was so special that everyone wanted him captured/dead. So why was he a failure? Just a werewolf, why was he terrifying?

If you think all the three book was solely about Chloe, it's not. Book 1 was about Chloe cause she could summon spirits. Book 2 was about Derek, his awakening, Book 3 was about their powers I presume, the reckoning of their force. All of them linked back to Chloe but she's not really the main focus. In my own opinion. All in all, the plot was there but I'd have liked the writing to be more detailed and logical.

Worth a read if you're into supernatural, but not so much if you're looking for romance and perhaps an excitement.

The Program by Suzanne Young

Summary:

In Sloane’s world, true feelings are forbidden, teen suicide is an epidemic, and the only solution is The Program.

Sloane knows better than to cry in front of anyone. With suicide now an international epidemic, one outburst could land her in The Program, the only proven course of treatment. Sloane’s parents have already lost one child; Sloane knows they’ll do anything to keep her alive. She also knows that everyone who’s been through The Program returns as a blank slate. Because their depression is gone - but so are their memories.

Under constant surveillance at home and at school, Sloane puts on a brave face and keeps her feelings buried as deep as she can. The only person Sloane can be herself with is James. He’s promised to keep them both safe and out of treatment, and Sloane knows their love is strong enough to withstand anything. But despite the promises they made to each other, it’s getting harder to hide the truth. They are both growing weaker. Depression is setting in. And The Program is coming for them.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Book 1 - The Program; Book 2 - The Treatment

Thoughts:

Everyday, the kids are being monitored, until they turned reached the limit age. Suicides are the norm so the government implemented 'The Program' to help them. Sloane witnessed her brother's death, he friend's death and now her own boyfriend was being sent into The Program. She couldn't confide her sadness to her parents, because they'd think she needed help and they'd send her in, having her memories erased etc. She acted normal, even so, her parents turned her in because she was being too okay with the things that happened. Seriously? Seriously.

Sloane's friends died, one after another. Committing suicide. To the point that I broke down because I couldn't handle all these information. I gave up for a while, then decided to continue, hoping for the better. It's definitely less sick as the story continued, so now I'm looking forward to reading Book 2, hopefully the cure wouldn't be as sick.

This series is definitely .... depressing. If you're upset, DO NOT attempt reading it. I'm kinda happy with my life right now, but that makes no difference to me tearing up while trying to picture the scenario. But if you can take the sadness, it's definitely a must read. The writing is fantastic, mature-like, and makes you wanna read on. To hope.

Suzanne Young is a GOOD author. She managed to get her point delivered, making us feel the way the characters felt. I'm definitely keeping a lookout for her upcoming releases.

We Were Liars by E.Lockhart

Summary:

A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends - the Liars - whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.

We Were Liars is a modern, sophisticated suspense novel from National Book Award finalist and Printz Award honoree E. Lockhart.

Read it.
And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Thoughts:

The brief summary sounded intriguing and I hadn't even pause to ponder the worse scenarios EVER.

Cady met an accident, but she couldn't remember it, nor the events that happened during her summer fifteen. She thought she drowned. No one ever mentioned the events of summer fifteen to her because she was ill, suffering from an incurable migraine.

Cady grew up spending every summer with Johnny, Mirrin and Gat. They were The Liars. No one ever mentioned their life outside this private island. Cady was in love with Gat, but they could not be together. Cady's grandad was a control freak, and he was filthy rich.

Summer fifteen, Cady's granny passed away. She had an accident. Everything changed. Cady never spoke to The Liars anymore, till she went back in summer seventeen. Her memories started coming back. She remembered during summer fifteen, The Liars burned the house down because they wanted freedom from being controlled by the need of money. They were drunk. They each poured gasoline on each floor. Gat had the basement, Cady had the kitchen, Johnny and Mirrin had the second level. Only Cady survived. She lit the fire and accidentally locked everyone else in. They died screaming. The figures she saw during her summer seventeen, they were the ghosts. The ghosts moved on. And now, Cady lives alive alone.

I was shocked by the twist. I thought that everyone stopped contacting her because the friendship wasn't real. But it was because they were dead. Dead. I also thought Gat decided that he didn't love Cady enough, but he loved Cady since day one when they met.

So heartbreaking. My tears did come out. Almost.

Twilight by Stephanie Meyer

Summary:

About three things I was absolutely positive:

First, Edward was a vampire.

Second, there was a part of him -and I didn't know how dominant that part might be- that thirsted for my blood.

And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

When Bella Swan moves to the gloomy town of Forks and meets Edward Cullen, her life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. With his porcelain skin, golden eyes, mesmerizing voice, and supernatural gifts, Edward is both irresistible and impenetrable. Up until now, he has managed to keep his true identity hidden, but Bella is determined to uncover his dark secret.

What Bella doesn't realize is the closer she gets to him, the more she is putting herself and those around her at risk. And it might be too late to turn back..

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Thoughts:

This book is good. The movie is really just as described, though less detailed and more extra scenes. I wasn't wowed by the book because I was anticipating from the movie itself, so definitely a read-before-watch kind of book. My favorite character other than Bella and Edward, was Seth. He's so adorable!! Even in the movie too. Jacob not so much because .... too wolfy sticky to Bella at the start which annoyed me. Bella and Edward only! Lol.

Among the four books, the last book was the best. Probably because the movie added scenes that wasn't in the book (the war vision) and omitted those tiny details, like how Bella was amazing in controlling her thirst that blew the Cullen family away (getting Jasper upset because he was weak). But I'm thrilled that Bella was even more special in a way. Go Bella!! Vampire for life!

Book 1- Twilight; Book 2 - New Moon; Book 3 - Eclipse; Book 4 - Breaking Dawn.

Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Summary:

Winning will make you famous.
Losing means certain death.

In a dark vision of the near future, a terrifying reality TV show is taking place. Twelve boys and twelve girls are forced to appear in a live event called the Hunger Games. There is only one rule: kill or be killed.

When sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen steps forward to take her sister's place in the games, she sees it as a death sentence. But Katniss has been close to death before. For her, survival is second nature.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Thoughts:

BEST.STORY.BOOK.EVER.

Book 1 - The Hunger Games; Book 2 - Catching Fire; Book 3 - Mockingjay.

I am not kidding. I cannot seem to find any books better plot of The Hunger Games, can you? If you can, please share with me! Honestly, this book left me speechless. Left me crying. Left me smiling. Left me wishing that there's a book 4. And another book 5. I've reread this thrice. Thrice! & every read is as good as the first.

What caught my attention in the first book was when Katniss volunteered for her sister. To me, Peter's love for Katniss was a little too abrupt, and it took quite a while for me to digest that it's real and not just for show. I was depressed when Rue died. She's such a nice child! Every bit was so intense and I was only able to relax when Peter and Katniss were pronounced as winners!

In the second book, I cried during the part where the man put three fingers up, a symbol of hope, and was shot to death. I was really surprised to know that almost all of her allies sworn to keep her alive even if it meant sacrificing their lives. But all Katniss wanted was Peter to be alive, not her. After she was saved, she was in a hysteric that there's no more District 12, and District 13 was real.

Last book was definitely the hype. "If we burn, you'll burn with us!" I'm really really really depressed when Peter had forgotten all about Katniss. He couldn't differentiate what was real before because the Capitol toyed with his head. Poor Peter. It was really a major twist at the end. Prim died, and it was District 13 who killed her sister. It was the part whereby I really put the book down and breathe for a good five minutes. I mean, PRIM DIED!?! Damn glad that Katniss made the right decision in putting an arrow through the murderer who tried to improvise a new game? Bastard.

It wasn't a happy ending for me. But I'm glad that Katniss chose Peter. I mean obviously she didn't need Gale. I used to like Gale, but at the end of third book, nah he's too heartless and fierce and overflowing with the need for revenge.

The book is so good. Seriously, a book that made me really really cry? *Thumbs up!!* I will definitely make sure my future kids read this series. Gosh, best best best!

The Farm by Emily Mckay

Summary:

Life was different in the Before: before vampires began devouring humans in a swarm across America; before the surviving young people were rounded up and quarantined. These days, we know what those quarantines are - holding pens where human blood is turned into more food for the undead monsters, known as Ticks. Surrounded by electrical fences, most kids try to survive the Farms by turning on each other.

And when trust is a thing of the past, escape is nearly impossible.

Lily and her twin sister Mel have a plan. Though Mel can barely communicate, her autism helps her notice things no one else notices - like the portion of electrical fence that gets turned off every night. Getting across won’t be easy, but as Lily gathers what they need to escape, a familiar face appears out of nowhere, offering to help.

Carter was a schoolmate of Lily’s in the Before. Managing to evade capture until now, he has valuable knowledge of the outside world. But like everyone on the Farm, Carter has his own agenda, and he knows that behind the Ticks is an even more dangerous threat to the human race.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Thoughts:

What a twistful story! Initially I thought it was all about vamps but no, this is about how Lily tried keep her and her twin alive. Okay maybe a little about stupid vamps revenge?

Book 1 - The Farm; Book 2 - The Lair; Book 3 - The Vault (To be released in November 2014)

It frustrated me because Mel couldn't speak well and weak. So weak. In the apocalypse setting, I think she should have just died in the first chapter. Spoiler alert, she died by saving Lily from a Tick and she had her chest dug apart. Gross. To make sure Mel stayed dead and not revive as a Tick, Lily had to chop her head off. Instead of doing that, she requested the vamp to bite Mel. It was just a slight chance of Mel reawakening and changing into a vamp instead of a tick, but Mel had the gene to regenerate. She was revived as a vamp, and now she was angry with her sister for turning her into a freak.

Lily was what I expected, someone brave and would do anything to keep her family alive. She's also smart and I think Carter and her would have a serious love story soon? Can't wait!

It's really crazy how the end of the second book, it was revealed that the start of the whole Ticks was due to a stupid vamp revenge. So ridiculous!! But it was kind of touching that the twins found their dad who was one of the well-known scientist blah blah.

Not a bad plot, definitely interesting as truth uncovers and they will realize the one that they've tried to trust wasn't really trustworthy.

Abandon Trilogy by Meg Cabot

Summary:

New from #1 New York Times bestselling author Meg Cabot, a dark, fantastical story about this world ... and the underworld.

Though she tries returning to the life she knew before the accident, Pierce can't help but feel at once a part of this world, and apart from it. Yet she's never alone . . . because someone is always watching her. Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone there wants you back.

But now she's moved to a new town. Maybe at her new school, she can start fresh. Maybe she can stop feeling so afraid.

Only she can't. Because even here, he finds her. That's how desperately he wants her back. She knows he's no guardian angel, and his dark world isn't exactly heaven, yet she can't stay away ... especially since he always appears when she least expects it, but exactly when she needs him most.

But if she lets herself fall any further, she may just find herself back in the one place she most fears: the Underworld.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Thoughts:

So so so nerve-wrecking! In a good way of course. I thought I couldn't make through the first 5 chapters, but I did. So glad I did.

Meg Cabot has a way to pull you in to her novel. Confusing but not to the extent that you'd want to burn the book. It's the kind of confusing that makes you wanna read more. Since a very long time, I'd never begged myself to read faster to grasp the full detail. How Pierce died. Why and how did she revive? Who is her guardian angel? How did he end up to be a protector in the death realm?

Pierce isn't bound to the underworld. She is in love with the one who rules the underworld, and she has to live there, to protect herself, her lover, her family and friends from the worse non-destructible enemies, the Furies, who would kill anyone who gets in their way. A few had already died for her.

It's so nerve-wrecking to me because I know yet I don't know the whole novel. I can't even predict any twists! Accurately speaking, my mind is twirling from all the info that I don't even have any space left to think. It's like everything just bam bam bam into my head.

I decided that I do like John despite all his job scopes. It's amazing to see how he, more than a century old, tried to change because he met Pierce. He's a changed man. One thing is this series, I almost died from curiosity because I didn't get to know his background till book 2 and it's not even the whole deal.

Major *thumbs up* on this series! Read it and you'll know what I'm saying. It's a little hard in the beginning, like reading detective stories, but at the end you'll be like 'This is so smacking ass smart plot'.

Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

Summary:

Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.

By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire student on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.

As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Thoughts:

I love fantasy novels and this series definitely do not disappoint! Witches, werewolves, vampires etc. I fell in love with all the characters, even the evil witch who tried to create a demon army.

Book 1 - Hex Hall; Book 2 - Demonglass; Book 3 - Spell Bound.

Does anyone feel the same as me? Heartbroken because Cal died? Cal was betrothed to Sophie but Sophie fell in love with Archer. I think Sophie had feelings for Cal but she just refused to acknowledge. As said, the main characters were Sophie and Archer, but I feel so strongly for Cal despite him only appearing here and there when Sophie needed him to heal Archer. Maybe now I do hate Sophie a little, why did she choose Archer! <///3

Maybe I read too many fairy tales, that the girl always ends up with the hottest guy. Not say Cal isn't hot, but the author described Archer as the sex goddess.

The plot is real good too. It has the same effect on me as reading Vampire Academy. I just couldn't stop. I love the courage and determination of Sophie, kindness of Cal, warrior of Archer, and wittiness of Jenna. They're basically a really good team GOOD against the team BAD.

If only Cal didn't die. If only Sophie and Cal is the happily ever after.

Penryn & The End of The Days by Susan Ee

Summary:

It's been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back.

Anything, including making a deal with an enemy angel.

Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl.

Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they have only each other to rely on for survival. Together, they journey toward the angels' stronghold in San Francisco where she'll risk everything to rescue her sister and he'll put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Thoughts:

I must say this series is absolutely heartbreaking. It left me high and dry. Urgh my heart, please glue it back together! </3

It may not be an easy read, but once you pushed past the whole angels terminology part, you'll find yourself entwined with the insane angel-demon world, so compelled that time would fly by in a blink. Yes, then you'll bitch and whine about how short the two books are and how long more to wait for the last book. Kid you not, this is in fact the most torturous part, waiting.

Book 1 - Angel Fall; Book 2 - World After; Book 3 - To be released;

Before you read this series, you must cleanse away all your fairy tale thoughts. Angels are no kind creatures. They are violent, rude and painstakingly powerful. They are god's soldiers.

There wasn't much of a detailed explanation regarding to the 'apocalypse'. Other than the god's instructions. Which would only be revealed much later in the series and not in the beginning. So if you are hung up with the whole idea why, you'll be really frustrated, so don't.

Raffe's beautiful white wings were ripped from his back by the demon angel, Beliel. Her sister Paige was taken. And she needed Raffe's angel knowledge to find Paige. They fell in love, a forbidden love. If Raffe was found guilty, he'd become a fallen angel and executed.

They made it into the aerie, and Penryn found Paige, but she was different. Much stronger and more inhuman. Her teeth were razor sharp, and she fed on meat, human meat, to survive. Like a beast. Truth was, Paige hated Penryn for deserting her. She looked up to Beliel with love. Beliel, the one who took her away, turning her into a human pet, and dumping her to the experiment once his infatuation with human disappeared. Their loving sister relationship wasn't quite the same anymore.

Raffe was betrayed by the angel doctor, and he was given Beliel's black demon wings. On the other hand, Beliel got his beautiful white wings, the one which all other angels would look up to, archangel wings. Raffe was now being chastised as demon and despised by his own kind. He who thought Penryn died, left to hunt for Beliel, until he met her again.

The second book is insane! This whole series is definitely mind blowing fast paced and yes, your heart will wrench after so many drastic twists. Especially when Paige revealed her real thoughts. And when Raffe gave in to his real feelings, oh my god. I bet he'd throw away his angel duties to be with Penryn. Oh please be with Penryn.

This is a must read series!! Plenty of literal actions, but nothing gore. This isn't anything alike to Hunger Games since the whole plot is way different, but yes the excitement is there!

Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins

Summary:

Harper Price, peerless Southern belle, was born ready for a Homecoming tiara. But after a strange run-in at the dance imbues her with incredible abilities, Harper's destiny takes a turn for the seriously weird. She becomes a Paladin, one of an ancient line of guardians with agility, super strength and lethal fighting instincts.

Just when life can't get any more disastrously crazy, Harper finds out who she's charged to protect: David Stark, school reporter, subject of a mysterious prophecy and possibly Harper's least favorite person. But things get complicated when Harper starts falling for him--and discovers that David's own fate could very well be to destroy Earth.

With snappy banter, cotillion dresses, non-stop action and a touch of magic, this new young adult series from bestseller Rachel Hawkins is going to make y'all beg for more.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Thoughts:

It wasn't bad, but it wasn't really that pow-wow which I expected that it'd be after reading the first chapter. I over-expected it.

The first chapter was intriguing, despite already knowing that she'd turn into a samurai. Then it started to bore me out of my wits because it's all about Harper figuring out the 'new' her, then finding out she had to lay her life down to protect the David who she wasn't a fan of, and how she started crumbling out of control of her perfect lifestyle - perfect grades, cca, boyfriend etc. Nothing exciting.

What happened next was she round up to the idea of being a Paladin, finally figuring out that her perfect boyfriend Ryan was nothing more than a trophy and she actually had a thing for David. This was probably the last few chapters which suddenly brought my interest back. Her ex-boyfriend had become a Mage, her best friend had become Paladin and was taken by the enemy, and she, David and Ryan had to become a trio to save the world.

Awkward combination much but that's the general idea for book 2, which is yet to be released.

I was taken aback to know that Harper wasn't all-so-princessy. She wanted perfection way too much that it was sort of a sign of depression, because of her sister. Her beautiful sister who died on the night of Homecoming two years back because she drunk alcohol. Her beautiful sister who owned before all title she was holding now. She sworn not to let her parents down, not like her sister.

David too was a real twist. He was kidnapped, to be more exact, saved from the clutches of the enemies by a Mage and Paladin who were initially ordered to kill him. David was an Oracle and male Oracles were deemed to be an aberration. They were dangerous because their powers could be enhanced through spells, and it could cause the death of many innocents. And for a new Oracle to be born, the existing must die.

I guess what I felt throughout this journey was 'cool' to 'meh' and finally back to 'cool'. There wasn't much of the samurai details which I'd appreciate since it's all about Paladin, but well hopefully book 2 will be better.

Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

Summary:

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Thoughts:

This series is stunning. Absolutely intoxicating, I can't even pause for a moment to take a break! And then bam, end of book three. I literally died y'know because book 4 is only going to be released next year.

Book 1 - Cinder; Book 2 - Scarlet; Book 3 - Cress; Book 4 - Winter.

This is sort of an improvised story of Cinderella mixed with Snow White. But not exactly. Honestly, I think it's really hard to try to beat fairy tales, but Marissa Meyer did it. She did it. I am so awed and grateful to be able to read another best series ever!

Cinder has an evil stepmother, Adri, and two stepsisters, Pearl and Peony. Pearl is evil like Adri, but Peony is her only human friend. Her stepfather died in the plague. Sounds so Cinderella, don't you think? There is a vicious queen who would kill anyone who is more beautiful than her. And she wants to be an empress. She wants to marry Emperor Kai. But Emperor Kai already has his eyes set on Cinder. This is so Snow White, right? So if you love fairy tales, this is definitely one hell of a fantasy novel that you can't miss!

I adore all the characters! Except the evil Queen Levana, who is such a meanie. Will Cinder get a happily ever after? How will the Queen be defeated? Book 4, I cannot wait.

Definitely a big *thumbs up*!! It's not hard to grasp yet there's a certain kind of depth in it that differs from being fairy tales alike. It's not all about Cinder too, nor is it all about romance. There's a good balance in every aspect. After reading this, you'll crave for more.

Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing -not even a smear of blood- to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know.

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Thoughts:

I wasn't prepared to read this, until I watched the movie - City of Bones. The only reason I picked up this book was because I was unconvinced by the movie. The movie wasn't fantastic before I read the book. After reading, the movie -one word- sucks. I could not picture scenes from the movie as I was reading. First in history. The casts, they were so different. Like Jace should be darker and alluring rather than just intimidating. The only cast I like was Simon Lewis, exactly as described.

Before I start spoiling, I have to emphasize that I dislike this series despite the hype over it. It was draggy. Not because it's a series of six freaking books, but because of the twists. They don't make me crave for more, they make me confused and weary. Proof: I don't see myself getting bored of Harry Potter at all.

Book 1 - City of Bones; Book 2 - City of Ashes; Book 3 - City of Glass; Book 4 - City of Fallen Angels; Book 5 - City of Lost Souls; Book 6 - City of Heavenly Fire (to be released).

The whole story revolved about Clary, her brother Jonathan, her father Valentine and Jace. I felt like Clary was the only strong one in the whole series. She fights in her own way, creating new runes, a rune that binds the underworld together against Valentine. It was kind of ridiculous how Valentine died after how he was being hunted. Surprisingly the one to really fear was actually Jonathan. Clary kissed her own brother! Ewww.

Jace wasn't likable. He's too self-centered, always thinking he could make things okay. I was so annoyed with him! Big ego guy. His stupidity made Lilith tied him to Jonathan, which brought pain to Clary. If Cassandra Clare wrote him out to be so frustrating, she's definitely the best ever. I do not think Jace is hot, not in the books, never in the movie.

I felt sad for Simon, turning into a Vampire unconsciously, being dragged into the underworld just because he was so in love with Clary. Then he had to go through Clary's rejection yet still stay by her side. He was someone special, receiving the 'mark' which was then taken from him leaving him exposed to threats of his own kind, to save Jace again. A little part of me is excited for the last book, because finally he'd be the focus of the story.

One part that was really amusing was the breakup of Alec and Magnus, all because Alec was jealous of Magnus and his past. Warlocks don't die so they have a really long history. In the prequel, Will was close to Magnus because he needed his help. Magnus was being nice because he was attracted to Will's pain.

In each book there's a really epic twist which I'd usually be wowed, but no. Given a second chance, I wouldn't have started on this series. I read on thinking it would be better, so disappointed. The books have their own 'high' points which for me it's all about Simon and Magnus. They're my favorites but sadly they're side characters.

Infernal Devices Trilogy by Cassandra Clare

Tip: Read this before starting on Mortal Instruments. It makes you get into situation faster.

Summary:

In a time when Shadowhunters are barely winning the fight against the forces of darkness, one battle will change the course of history forever. Welcome to the Infernal Devices trilogy, a stunning and dangerous prequel to the New York Times bestselling Mortal Instruments series.

The year is 1878. Tessa Gray descends into London’s dark supernatural underworld in search of her missing brother. She soon discovers that her only allies are the demon-slaying Shadowhunters - including Will and Jem, the mysterious boys she is attracted to. Soon they find themselves up against the Pandemonium Club, a secret organization of vampires, demons, warlocks, and humans. Equipped with a magical army of unstoppable clockwork creatures, the Club is out to rule the British Empire, and only Tessa and her allies can stop them.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Thoughts:

Marvelously written! Fantabulous ohmgee I actually read it twice. The ending was so perfect, too perfect that I didn't question it though the norm me would go 'wtf'.

Book 1 - Clockwork Angel; Book 2 - Clockwork Prince; Book 3 - Clockwork Princess.

The first chapter already stolen my heart. Tessa saved by Will in the really cliche way. Tessa was not human. She was something more powerful, a shape-shifter. She was a forbidden offspring from a demon and shadowhunter. A new race that the Magister wanted to create. She was the to-be-bride of Mortmain, a powerful warlock. The key to give rise to an army of clockwork soldiers, immune to Shadowhunters weapons.

I was heartbroken when I found out the reason why Will was so mean to everyone, why he left his loving family, why he chose Jem as his parabatai. Because of a curse placed upon him that the demon would kill everyone he loved. His older sister died. *Clenches heart* When he realized that the belief imposed was unreal, he wanted Tessa. It was too late. Tessa had agreed to marry Jem. The marriage was unsuccessful, Tessa was taken and Jem became a Silent Brother. Tessa finally found out that she was a warlock, that she couldn't age. After Will died at an old age, she left her kids so she wouldn't have to face another death of her loved ones.

Many parts where my heart wrenched, but there's also many parts where I'm filled with endless joy. Like Charlotte Branwell and Henry Branwell finally realized that they had been in love with each other, Charlotte got pregnant, Tessa and Will got together, and Jem managed to turn back to human and be together with Tessa etc.

As I mentioned, the norm me would think 'Wtf how is it possible to change from a silent brother back to human?' But it was a really good ending because Tessa got together with the two good men! Doubts forgotten haha.

One of the best plots ever! I really felt like riding on a roller coaster ride, with steep ups and downs. Thank you Cassandra Clare for this awesome, beautifully written series!

Fifty Shades Trilogy by E.L. James

(I read this book a couple of months ago, but I think it's good to share because it's gonna be a major motion picture!)

Summary:

When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too - but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success - his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family - Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.

Erotic, amusing, and deeply moving, the Fifty Shades Trilogy is a tale that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever.

This book is intended for mature audiences.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Thoughts:

This book is R21! Totally, no exceptions. I wasn't into the book at all because of me judging the book based on what my friends said. This series is definitely a tale that obsessed me, possessed me, and is gonna stay with me forever.

First off, I was taken aback by how vulgar it was written in. Not the like of 'fuck you cheebye' vulgar, but more of the sexual kind. Dominant-Submissive relationship is what defines Christian and Anastasia. I didn't even know such things exist, so this book has taught me a great deal of things. If you are light-hearted as me, this book is probably a turn-off to you.

Tip: Ignore the sexual descriptions! It'd 100% make you feel better.

I have to say I am super proud of myself to read through the whole three books. I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! I cannot get enough of it. The moment I chose to ignore things which were disgusting to me, the read was non-stop exciting. I just had to know what's going to happen to both of them!

It was really frustrating to see Christian struggling to open up to new emotions, and even more heartbreaking to witness how Ana was 'abused' yet loved by Christian. The part where Christian flared at Ana when she accidentally got pregnant and went to find his ex-dominant was indescribable. I could literally cry out for Ana y'know!? Stupid Christian for being so self-centered. But the part where Ana sacrificed her life and baby just to keep Christian safe was SO TOUCHING. Kid you not, my heart throbbed, stabbed and joyed at all those.

Book 1 - Fifty Shades of Grey; Book 2 - Fifty Shades Darker; Book 3 - Fifty Shades Freed.

This is definitely a MUST read. You're missing out one of the best novels till date! Don't be judgmental like me in the beginning. I regretted judging the erotic part of the story and missing out the best story ever.

Delirium Trilogy by Lauren Oliver

Summary:

Ninety-five days, and then I'll be safe. I wonder whether the procedure will hurt. I want to get it over with. It's hard to be patient. It's hard not to be afraid while I'm still uncured, though so far the deliria hasn't touched me yet. Still I worry. They say in the old days, love drove people to madness. The deadliest of all deadly things: It kills you both when you have it and when you don't.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Thoughts:

Long story cut short, "If you were told love was a disease, would you take the cure?"

This book is so heartbreaking. I was drawn into it the moment it taunted me to know what is deliria. Why is it deadly? The signs of deliria. Just, everything.

Lena met Alex, and her whole world changed. She learnt about people like Alex, fake deliria-cured people. Love. She fell in love. Her best friend, the one who misled her to the realization of love, betrayed her. Because she was jealous of her love. Her best friend almost had her killed. But Alex sacrificed himself to save her. She managed to scrape life by in The Wilds, where she joined The Resistance and met Julian, an uncured. She finally moved on and fell in love with him. Fate had toyed with her. Alex was alive. He now despised her for leaving him behind and finding new love, until he knew how tough it was for Lena.

Wanna know if Lena chooses Alex or Julian? You got to read it yourself hehe.

Book 1 - Delirium; Book 2 - Pandemonium; Book 2 - Requiem.

Every pace of the book was intense. Her best friend was so bitchy! I hate her, even though at the end she helped Lena. Lena is so strong that I admire her guts for love. Also Alex, he didn't die after all! I was really depressed because he 'died' in book 1. Poor Julian. I have no idea to be happy or sad for him when he realized he was in love with Lena. But he was there for Lena, he threw away his beliefs and family, just to be with her.

The part about love is still tickling me. Can I live without love if there's a cure to end the pain it brings? Love makes you stronger, but falls right apart when being challenged.

Panic by Lauren Oliver

Summary:

Panic began as so many things do in Carp, a dead-end town of 12,000 people in the middle of nowhere: because it was summer, and there was nothing else to do.

Heather never thought she would compete in Panic, a legendary game played by graduating seniors, where the stakes are high and the payoff is even higher. She'd never thought herself as fearless, the kind of person who would fight to stand out. But when she finds something, and someone, to fight for, she will discover that she is braver than she ever thought.

Dodge has never been afraid of Panic. His secret will fuel him, and get him all the way through the game, he's sure of it. But what he doesn't know is that he's not the only one with a secret. Everyone has something to play for.

For Heather and Dodge, the game will bring new alliances, unexpected revelations, and the possibility of first love for each of them - and the knowledge that sometimes the very things we fear are those we need the most.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Thoughts:

I came upon this book through my usual subscribed book vloggers on YouTube and their introduction makes me *squeals* because this is really the kind of fantasy novels I'm glued to. And it's by Lauren Oliver! Her Delirium series gave me a short-lasted rush and I craved so long for more. I was really excited about this book and finally I found the extra time to read! Which was, staying up till 5 am a few nights ago to read it. Gosh, what was I thinking!

It was really hard to absorb in the beginning. I almost gave up. Yeah yeah I know Panic was a game, but being thrown into the game on the first page of the book? So out of the blue! I was then kinda smack in the face upon the introduction of so many characters. Not much details about who they were and it was so difficult to remember them. Out of a sudden, it was a brief recap about why Heather joined the game, then why the game was necessary. I knew the citizens weren't rich, but it wasn't emphasized severely in the book. The prize was $60k cash, which seemingly could last them forever?

I pushed myself on and till the end. *Shakes head* The story was really disappointing. I did love the subtle twists here and there, but many parts of it were so random! So Panic was an illegal game so the players played against law too and had to be careful of being caught by law? The part where Nat suddenly confessed her love to Dodge caught me by surprise too because Nat broke up with him initially and sort of hooked up with another guy, then she suddenly came into picture saying his life is in danger. Then Heather suddenly forgave Bishop for lying to her and they fell in love ... ? Ray ended up in the crash for the last challenge but no more details was given? Was he in life danger or not?

I did love the ending though. Heather won! I thought she was going to die in the car that Dodged had tweak to kill his other competitor, Ray. Happily ever after for all of them.

It was a disappointing read, probably because I expected way too much? It's the kind of read whereby I read till the end because I had to, not because I want to. Nevertheless, I still love Lauren Oliver!

The Selection Trilogy by Kiera Cass

Summary:

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself - and realizes that the life she always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Thoughts:

It's a really short novel which took me less than two hours to complete for each book. Very interesting, but I wished the 'wow' factor is more WOW. Very similar to Hunger Games plot. People are separated by castes and competing in a more civilized way - be a bride for the prince. Reward is an upgrade of caste and more money. More romance in here, though it wasn't that in depth.

There are eight castes, which I didn't grasp at all because they didn't elaborate all. I know being a 'one' is next to royalty, 'two' ???, 'three' is teacher, 'four' is farming , 'five' is arts, 'six' is cleaners, 'seven' ??? and 'eight' is criminals. It's a relatively new introduction of 'casting' to me because I didn't study much about them in school. So America (seriously what's with the names of the people) was from 'five' and her lover was from 'six'. They broke up before the lottery because the guy didn't want to down her caste as he couldn't afford to support her. Females have to follow the caste number of the males in marriage. The lottery was weird too, it's more of the internal affairs choose rather than go by luck. As described in the book, all the girls are really beautiful. Really, how can it be?

Oh one thing which amuses me, the law states sexual activity only after marriage. Pregnancy before marriage is a crime. People get married early because of that law. And they have a big family because more children means more jobs to support the family in future.

The prince never had a girlfriend before and him dating was watched by nationwide. It wasn't easy for him. His ultimate goal is to find a good wife who chooses him instead of the crown. The prince fell for America but she wasn't ready. She was heartbroken over Aspen. The prince said this competition would end when she could move on. But Aspen was drafted (i.e. army) and posted to the palace and he was the guard of America. So America had to choose. Who she loved and who she loves now. Read it yourself to know the ending!

Book 1 - The Selection; Book 2 - The Elite; Book 3 - Yet to be released.

In my opinion, I would say this series for teens below sixteen to read since it's super easy to comprehend, not much complications. Light hearted and I'd recommend reading it on-the-go! Makes the journey pass by faster, and doesn't gives you a headache trying to picture the details.

Matched Trilogy by Ally Condie

Summary:

Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate ... until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and this is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Thoughts:

Overall it's a good read but the way it was written could have been better, in my own opinion, because I dislike reading point-of-views. Too confusing. If you do, you'd like the book much better than I did for sure.

I like the plot. It's kind of reminds me of Divergent, but not exactly. The Society made choices for all of the people, however they did not know that the rebels were already within them since many years ago. People were chosen by the Rising, via immunizing babies from the red pill which would take their memory, and the Plague which would kill. But not Cassia. She was a tool of both the Society and Rising, because she could forget. But she's a fighter.

The story revolves around how Cassia's choice sent Ky to die, how Ky fought to stay alive, how Cassia risked everything to find Ky back, why Ky was reclassified as an Aberration not Anomaly, how they were separated then met again in the wrath of death, how both Xander and Cassia found the cure to the mutated Plague, and their final choice - stay with Rising or go to the Otherworld where no one ever comes back.

So so so many non-stop twists! But I love the ending. Even though many died, but Ky survived the mutation! Happily ever after for Cassia-Ky and Xander-Lei!

Vampire Kisses by Ellen Shreiber

(Ps: I couldn't get over my last read, Divergent Trilogy - Allergiant by Veronica Roth. So I decided to read this young children series, suitable for 12 years old and below.)

Summary:

The mansion on top of Benson Hill has been empty and boarded up for years. But a new family has moved in. A family that never ventures during the day. Who are these creepy people -- especially the handsome, dark elusive Alexander Sterling? Or rather, what are they? Could the town gossip actually be true? Are they vampires?

Raven who secretly covets a vampire kiss, both at the risk of her own mortality and Alexander's loving trust, is dying to uncover the truth.

#1 Vampire Kisses; #2 Kissing Coffins; #3 Vampireville; #4 Dance with a Vampire; #5 The Coffin Club; #6 Royal Blood; #7 Love Bites; #8 Cryptic Cravings; #9 Immortal Hearts.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

My thoughts:

Not a read for my age. Too young. It has nine books in total, crazy that I actually sat through it. Not worth the time spent but I just had to spend this time to move on from Divergent. Good thing was it's really light and easy for my heart to digest, so yay mission accomplished.

The plot is mehhhhhhhh boring because from book 1 to 9, it's all about Raven wanting to be turned into a vampire, how she almost succeeded yet failed. I sort of despise the ending. It could have had a crazy twist, like Raven found that she really love her nemesis Trevor, and she chose him over Alexander who was the vampire.

Summary:

Sixteen year old Beatrice Prior was born into Abnegation family, but selflessness has never come naturally to her like it does to her brother, Caleb. She doesn't feel belong to the faction. When the time comes for Beatrice to take her aptitude test, her results were inconclusive. Instead of fitting neatly into any one faction, she shows equal aptitude for all three - Abnegation, Erudite and Dauntless. She is a 'Divergent'. And being a divergent, her life is in critical danger and no one must know who she is.

On Choosing Day, she decides to choose Dauntless, and she renames herself as Tris. In the midst of staying alive, she falls in love with her instructor, Four, and she slowly learns his real name and the story behind his nickname.

Will Beatrice Prior, an ex-Abnegation survive while holding her secret a secret, or will she be hunted down by her enemies and die?

Three books: Divergent, Insurgent, Allergiant.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Thoughts:

Absolutely intense! Full of twists, making you never able to predict what's going to happen. Love it!

It wasn't easy to remember so many factions and what they stand for initially, but as the book goes on, it just comes to you like *snap* oh this that wow all these makes sense! From the start till end of the first book, I was already absorbed. So so exciting! From how Tris make her choice and how she tried to be a Dauntless. My heart wrenched when Tris's parents died to save her.

The second book was hell load to digest but it was still a good one. I find myself taking breaks from the book because the war between the factions is too confusing. I was emotional when Tris can't move on from all the deaths of her loved one, and almost died in the hands of her own brother Caleb! Sad, angry blah. I was annoyed with Tobias for being so ... mean to Tris. Thank goodness he still trusts Tris and helped her accomplish what her parents wanted.

Last book was a real twist. Kid you not. They're all a part of U.S.'s city experiments, in Chicago, not the entire Earth which I presumed they were. Tobias is a real pain in the ass for being like a whiny girl, unlike Tris who the man who thinks and acts appropriately. BUT. Tris died. Tris died. Tris died. She's the hero and she died. Ya, I'm rambling over this forever because I cannot believe the twist was she died. She sacrificed herself for her evil Caleb, fought the death serum, and killed by a fucking bullet? & Tobias have to learn to survive on his own? NO!!!

Sad ending makes me really sad. I'm going to have a hard time moving on from this awesome series. If only Tris and Tobias can live happily ever after over all the fighting. Nonetheless, *THUMBS UP*!

Reboot by Amy Tintera

Summary:

Five years ago, Wren Connolly was shot three times in the chest. After 178 minutes, she came back as a Reboot: stronger, faster, able to heal, and less emotional. The longer Reboots are dead, the less humans they are when they return. Wren 178 is the deadliest Reboot in the Republic of Texas. Now seventeen years old, she serves as a soldier for HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation).

Wren's favorite part of the job is training new Reboots, but her latest newbie is the worst she's ever seen. As a 22, Callum Reyes is practically human. His reflexes are too slow, he's always asking questions, and his ever-present smile is freaking her out. Yet there's something about him she can't ignore. When Callum refuses to follow an order, Wren is given one last chance to get him in line - or she'll have to eliminate him. Wren has never disobeyed before and knows if she does, she'll be eliminated, too. But she has also never felt as alive as she does around Callum.

The perfect soldier is done taking orders.

(Quoted from goodreads.com)

Thoughts:

Not too bad, interesting. Can be better? Definitely a yes. More twists, emotions, actions etc.

It's a happy ending of Book 1 yay. Callum didn't die from the routine injections as Wren managed to break into the headquarters to get the remedy for him. The routine injections was an experiment of HARC to make the under 60s more violent so they can fight better like the over 100s. Like Wren, 178, the best fighter. And she succeeded in releasing all other trapped Reboots and flew them out to find a safe haven for them. And to train and fight against the HARC. That's how the book 1 ends.

Only thing is I couldn't grasp why only some people get the virus and allow them to be rebooted, and some people don't. The book never actually explained in detail, hopefully in Book 2 it'll be revealed?

An enjoyable read for sure, a change in my normal crazy supernatural stories. This one is more real should I say?

Introduction

Bookverie is a separate space for me to document my reads. Reading circulates ideas, calms my soul and enables me to learn new expressive ways, be it fiction or non-fiction.

My favorite genre is definitely the fantasy novels! And the ones which will capture my heart first are those in Trilogy. Why? Because dejection will only sink in at the end of three books. Get me? Hitting the last page of the book always leave me crying. That's why I prefer longer books, obviously not too long too. Personally, the longer I am in the depression state, it signifies just how awesome the book had been.

Till now my favorite series is Hunger Games Trilogy. It is a must read!!

I will try my very best to keep this space more alive. I promise! If only reading lecture notes is as interesting as books. Meh.
