The Farm by Emily Mckay

Summary:

Life was different in the Before: before vampires began devouring humans in a swarm across America; before the surviving young people were rounded up and quarantined. These days, we know what those quarantines are - holding pens where human blood is turned into more food for the undead monsters, known as Ticks. Surrounded by electrical fences, most kids try to survive the Farms by turning on each other.

And when trust is a thing of the past, escape is nearly impossible.

Lily and her twin sister Mel have a plan. Though Mel can barely communicate, her autism helps her notice things no one else notices - like the portion of electrical fence that gets turned off every night. Getting across won’t be easy, but as Lily gathers what they need to escape, a familiar face appears out of nowhere, offering to help.

Carter was a schoolmate of Lily’s in the Before. Managing to evade capture until now, he has valuable knowledge of the outside world. But like everyone on the Farm, Carter has his own agenda, and he knows that behind the Ticks is an even more dangerous threat to the human race.

Thoughts:

What a twistful story! Initially I thought it was all about vamps but no, this is about how Lily tried keep her and her twin alive. Okay maybe a little about stupid vamps revenge?

Book 1 - The Farm; Book 2 - The Lair; Book 3 - The Vault (To be released in November 2014)

It frustrated me because Mel couldn't speak well and weak. So weak. In the apocalypse setting, I think she should have just died in the first chapter. Spoiler alert, she died by saving Lily from a Tick and she had her chest dug apart. Gross. To make sure Mel stayed dead and not revive as a Tick, Lily had to chop her head off. Instead of doing that, she requested the vamp to bite Mel. It was just a slight chance of Mel reawakening and changing into a vamp instead of a tick, but Mel had the gene to regenerate. She was revived as a vamp, and now she was angry with her sister for turning her into a freak.

Lily was what I expected, someone brave and would do anything to keep her family alive. She's also smart and I think Carter and her would have a serious love story soon? Can't wait!

It's really crazy how the end of the second book, it was revealed that the start of the whole Ticks was due to a stupid vamp revenge. So ridiculous!! But it was kind of touching that the twins found their dad who was one of the well-known scientist blah blah.

Not a bad plot, definitely interesting as truth uncovers and they will realize the one that they've tried to trust wasn't really trustworthy.
